European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said after Russia’s latest massive attack on Ukraine that G7 leaders at the summit in France will discuss increasing pressure on Russia to bring an end to the war.
Von der Leyen wrote this on X, UATV English reports.
The European Commission President noted that Ukraine came under heavy attack overnight, resulting in more civilian deaths, while the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, sustained significant damage.
“Today, G7 leaders are meeting in Évian. We will discuss further steps to increase pressure on Russia, bring Putin to the negotiating table, and end this senseless killing,” von der Leyen stated.
According to her, Europe and the Ukrainian people want peace, while Russia has once again demonstrated that it is interested only in violence and destruction.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he expects a response from the G7 countries to Russia’s massive strikes on Ukrainian cities.
Media reports have indicated that European leaders intend to use meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump during the G7 summit to engage him in efforts aimed at facilitating new peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
Zelenskyy held a phone conversation with Trump ahead of the G7 summit. During the summit, the two leaders are expected to discuss additional ideas for bringing peace closer.
