A huge earthquake, measured at 6.8 on the Richter Scale, hit near Jan Maen island, belonging to the Norwegian province of Nurlan, at 1:49 a.m. Friday (Greenwich time).

Seismologists rated the earthquake as one of the most powerful in Norway’s history.

“I had the heart in my throat when I woke up because the mirror and the cabinets shook,” a resident, Silje Wennesland told NTB, Norway’s News Agency. “Fortunately, no one was injured, and everyone is fine, but we noticed it.”

The quake started 10 kilometers deep and 407 kilometers from Ittokkortorormit, Iceland.

There is no information yet as to whether the quake has disrupted the island’s volcanic activity. Underground trembling caused high waves in the Greenland Sea, but no tsunami threats have been reported.
