Ukraine is initiating all relevant procedures within UNESCO and other international mechanisms, demanding an “immediate and adequate response” to the Russian strike that caused significant damage to the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced the move in a Facebook post, UATV English reports.

The minister stressed that by striking the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, Russian ruler Vladimir Putin had permanently placed his name among the worst barbarians in history.

“Today we are dealing with Russian terrorists who have already surpassed ISIS in their crimes against cultural heritage. Only Russian scoundrels, who hold nothing sacred, could deliberately damage the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a unique UNESCO World Heritage site under special protection,” Sybiha said.

He added that Kyiv expects a “strong response” from international institutions and world capitals.

“We are urgently initiating all relevant procedures within UNESCO and all other international mechanisms, demanding an immediate and adequate response to this act of state barbarism. We expect a decisive reaction from international institutions and capitals. No vague statements, silence, or weak measures. Concrete action is needed to stop Russian barbarism,” the foreign minister emphasized.

During the massive attack on Kyiv, a fire broke out on the grounds of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. The Kyiv City Military Administration reported a direct strike on the monastery complex and significant damage.

The head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan Epiphanius, also condemned the attack, describing the strike on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra as “another crime against humanity.”
