The United Kingdom’s support for Ukraine and its broader foreign policy priorities will remain unchanged following Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation and the appointment of a new prime minister, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy said, UATV English reports.

Speaking to Euronews during the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk, Lammy stressed that Britain would ensure continuity in its foreign policy once a new Labour Party leader is elected and forms a government.

“There is simply no question of changing our foreign policy course,” Lammy said.

He emphasized that the UK has consistently supported Ukraine under successive governments and will continue to do so.

“We have consistently supported Ukraine under every government that has come and gone, and that will continue,” he said.

Lammy also reaffirmed London’s commitment to rebuilding ties with Europe.

“We have made it absolutely clear that we are reconnecting with the international community and resetting our relationship with Europe, and that will continue,” he added.

His remarks came after the UK pledged an additional £290 million (€340 million) to support Ukraine’s reconstruction and energy security at the Ukraine Recovery Conference.

Lammy, who served as the UK’s foreign secretary until September last year and is considered one of Starmer’s closest allies, has already pledged his full support to Andy Burnham, who is expected to succeed Starmer as Labour leader and prime minister.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on June 22. Burnham, currently Mayor of Greater Manchester, has confirmed he will run for the Labour leadership after winning a parliamentary by-election. Candidate nominations are scheduled to open on July 9 and close on July 16. If no other candidates enter the race, Burnham could become prime minister shortly afterward.

According to Lammy, the incoming government is expected to maintain the UK’s key foreign policy priorities, including continued support for Ukraine and closer economic and trade cooperation with the European Union.
