President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer for allocating £210 million to support Ukraine’s nuclear energy sector and for introducing a new package of sanctions against Russia.
In a post on X on June 16, Zelenskyy said the funding will be provided through UK Export Finance and used to supply enriched uranium for Ukraine’s nuclear power industry, UATV English reports.
“I am grateful to the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer for another decision in support of Ukraine. UK Export Finance will provide £210 million for the supply of enriched uranium to support Ukraine’s nuclear energy sector, which is the primary source of energy for our people and our economy,” Zelenskyy said.
The president noted that London has also introduced a new sanctions package targeting Russia’s shadow fleet and financial networks used by Moscow to circumvent existing restrictions.
According to Zelenskyy, the latest British measures are the first to target tankers transporting sanctioned liquefied natural gas (LNG), revenues from which Russia uses to finance its war against Ukraine.
“This is a necessary step. Just as with oil tankers, it is important that there is ultimately an opportunity not only to stop these shadow fleet vessels but also to seize them. Thank you,” Zelenskyy said.
Earlier on June 16, the United Kingdom unveiled a new sanctions package aimed at Russia’s shadow fleet, LNG tankers, and financial networks involved in bypassing Western sanctions.
