US President Donald Trump said that his words about ending the Russian-Ukrainian war “in one day” were figurative.
He said this in an exclusive interview with Time magazine on the occasion of the first 100 days of his second presidential term, Ukrinform reports.
“Well, I said it figuratively, and I said it as an exaggeration to emphasize my point. Obviously, people know that when I said that, I said it as a joke, but I also said that this (war – ed.) will end,” Trump said.
When asked why it had taken him so long to resolve the war, he replied that he had “only been in office for three months.”
“I’ve been here for three months. This war has been going on for three years. This is a war that would never have happened if I had been president. This is Biden’s war. This is not my war. I have nothing to do with it. This war would never have happened. Putin would never have done it. This war would never have happened,” he added.
Journalists also asked him whether he believes that Putin will be able to conclude a peace agreement, and Trump said yes.
“Yes, I think Putin will do it. I think Putin would prefer to do it differently. I think he wants to go in and take everything instead. I think I am the only one who can negotiate this (peace – ed.). We had very good negotiations and we are very close to an agreement. And I don’t believe that anyone else could make such a deal,” he added.
