Sweden is allocating $108 million to support the PURL initiative, under which Ukraine’s partners purchase American-made weapons for Ukraine. The announcement was made by Sweden’s Ministry of Defence on Thursday, according to UATV English.
The ministry emphasized that the funding is part of a previously announced military assistance package for Ukraine.
Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson said that the PURL initiative allows Ukraine to quickly gain access to the U.S. defense equipment it needs most, including advanced air defense systems and ammunition.
“This is crucial for enabling Ukraine to defend itself against further Russian attacks. Sweden’s support is long-term, comprehensive, and based on Ukraine’s needs,” Jonson stressed.
This is the fourth time Sweden has contributed funds through the PURL mechanism. With the new allocation, Sweden’s total support provided through PURL has reached $543 million.
The announcement came on the same day as the NATO defense ministers’ meeting, during which Germany announced an additional $400 million for Ukraine’s air defense and Patriot missiles through the PURL and Jumpstart programs.
Meanwhile, Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken unveiled plans to transfer additional F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
