Romanian Prime Minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Marcel Ciolacu has announced his resignation following his coalition’s poor performance in the first round of the presidential election, reports G4Media.ro.

After a PSD leadership meeting, Ciolacu stated he will submit his resignation on the evening of May 5. He added that PSD ministers will consult with other coalition parties about whether they will remain as interim members of the government. Ciolacu had earlier hinted at the possibility of the Social Democrats leaving the coalition.

“This coalition is no longer legitimate, as its candidate failed to reach the second round,” he said.

Ciolacu noted that Romania’s future president, to be elected on May 18, will decide — together with parties able to form a parliamentary majority — who will govern and who will become prime minister.

Following Ciolacu’s resignation, acting President Ilie Bolojan is expected to appoint an interim prime minister. Media reports suggest Education Minister Daniel David could take the role.

The first round of Romania’s presidential election was held on May 4, with pro-Russian far-right leader George Simion winning 40.94%, and Bucharest’s liberal mayor Nicușor Dan securing 20.99%.
