George Simion, leader of Romania’s far-right AUR party, won the first round of the presidential vote with 40.94%, according to near-final results (99.9% counted).
Liberal Bucharest mayor Nicușor Dan finished second with 20.99% and will face Simion in the runoff on May 18. The candidate from the ruling coalition, Crin Antonescu, came third with 20.13%.
Simion also dominated the overseas vote, winning 60% compared to Dan’s 26%.
“This is not just an electoral victory — it’s a victory for Romania’s dignity,” Simion said, vowing to promote nationalist policies.
In recent parliamentary elections, Simion’s AUR and other far-right groups won around 35% of seats. Simion has also suggested appointing controversial nationalist figure Călin Georgescu — barred from running — to a top post if he wins the presidency.
