Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has said that one of the principal objectives of the upcoming NATO summit is to demonstrate the Alliance’s unity and strengthen deterrence against any potential Russian aggression, UATV English reports.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Sikorski argued that Russia continues to wage a broad hybrid campaign against Western democracies aimed at weakening Allied cohesion.
“Russia is conducting a hybrid and cognitive war against the West, seeking to sow divisions among allies and between NATO countries and Ukraine,” Sikorski said.
According to the Polish foreign minister, the Alliance intends to send the opposite message by demonstrating that NATO has become stronger and more united in recent years.
“Instead, we will demonstrate that the Alliance is not only maintaining its unity but has become even stronger following the accession of Sweden and Finland. It would be an act of great imprudence and madness if Vladimir Putin decided to test the Alliance’s unity through any reckless actions,” he said.
Sikorski noted that U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to participate in the NATO summit in Ankara, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will hold consultations with Allied leaders on the eve of the gathering.
According to the minister, Poland expects the summit to reaffirm NATO members’ commitment to implementing decisions taken at previous Alliance meetings regarding higher defense spending.
“We are talking about a level of defense investment that will convince any potential adversary that attacking us simply is not worth it,” Sikorski said.
He stressed that strengthening military capabilities and increasing defense budgets remain essential elements of NATO’s collective deterrence strategy.
The remarks come amid heightened concern in Poland over Russia’s hybrid activities and possible attempts to test the Alliance’s resolve.
According to U.S. media reports, American officials recently warned Warsaw that Russia could be preparing an armed provocation on Polish territory designed to gauge NATO’s response under Article 5 of the Alliance’s collective defense commitments.
Commenting on those reports, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said his government is actively preparing for a range of scenarios involving potential Russian provocations.
Polish authorities have repeatedly warned that, alongside conventional military threats, Russia increasingly relies on cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, sabotage, and other hybrid tactics targeting NATO member states.
The upcoming NATO summit is expected to focus on strengthening the Alliance’s eastern flank, increasing defense investment, expanding military readiness, and coordinating continued support for Ukraine in response to Russia’s ongoing aggression.
