Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico called for greater diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine while highlighting Slovakia’s practical contribution to Ukraine’s recovery through a €100 million energy infrastructure program, UATV English reports.
Speaking at the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC 2026) in Gdańsk on June 25, Fico said the European Union should place greater emphasis on peace initiatives.
“The Slovak government has always called for more diplomacy. Judging by recent discussions among European leaders, more and more EU member states see value in this approach. I believe the European Union should support peace initiatives,” Fico said.
He stressed that Slovakia continues to assist Ukraine by serving as “a gateway to Ukraine” and helping strengthen the country’s energy security.
“We are contributing through an energy infrastructure program worth approximately €100 million, aimed at strengthening and stabilizing Ukraine’s electricity system and supporting its integration into the European energy market,” Fico said.
According to the Slovak prime minister, Slovakia and Ukraine are jointly expanding the capacity of the electricity interconnector linking Veľké Kapušany in Slovakia with Mukachevo in western Ukraine.
Fico also highlighted regional cooperation through the Carpathian Initiative, describing it as a trilateral platform involving Slovakia, Ukraine, and Poland.
He announced that Slovakia and Ukraine are preparing to hold their fourth joint government meeting in the near future, calling the format “a unique mechanism of bilateral cooperation” focused on practical results and dialogue.
The two-day Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk brings together governments, international organizations, businesses, and financial institutions to coordinate reconstruction efforts and strengthen long-term support for Ukraine.
