EUR 500 million from Switzerland to be spent for renovation of the Ukrainian train fleet

Switzerland will help Ukraine to upgrade its train fleet. Representatives of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine, the “Ukrzaliznytsia” state railroads company and representatives of the Swiss companies signed a memorandum of understanding in the President’s Office, UA reports.

Switzerland will allocate up to 500 million euros for the development of railway transport in Ukraine. This money will be spent to procure 30 suburban electric trains for Kyiv, the same number of trains will be distributed between Kharkiv and Dnipro cities.

“This is not our first meeting. Such meetings are always very pleasant. And today it is, I guess, a fundamental one – it’s a meeting at the beginning of our relations. I am very glad that we have a joint project. I think it will be a great signal to our countries and citizens of Ukraine so that they can see how we work together, that we are launching new infrastructure projects, new projects of the “Ukrzaliznytsia” – said President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to the press service of the President’s Office, the cooperation involves not only the purchase of trains, but also localization of Stadler production (Switzerland) through the construction of a new plant in Ukraine. In addition to suburban trains, the memorandum refers to 20 new regional electric trains and ten long-distance electric trains manufactured by Stadler to upgrade the rolling stock of the “Ukrzaliznytsia”.
