Ukraine’s plans to demine the Stanytsia Luhanska Bridge and adjacent territories have stalled as it’s gotten no guarantees that its sappers won’t be attacked by Russian-led militants.
“The main reason why the repair of the bridge does not start is the lack of security guarantees for our demining experts from illegal armed groups,” said Oleksander Borschevsky, who heads the ceasefire from the Ukrainian side.
While Ukraine has made inquiries through the OSCE, Russia’s hybrid forces have been silent about whether they’ll attack Ukrainian sappers as they demine the area, Ukraine’s Joint Forces Operation said.
On July 7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Stanytsia Luhanska and announced his intention to restore the destroyed bridge where people cross the demarcation line.
On July 31, at a meeting of the Trilateral Contact Group on Ukraine, the parties had agreed to allow the demining to happen on land adjacent to the bridge starting Aug. 1.
