Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset has condemned the damage inflicted on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra during Russia’s latest large-scale attack on the Ukrainian capital, describing it as another escalation in the destruction caused by the war, UATV English reports.
In a statement, Berset stressed that the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of Ukraine’s most important cultural and religious landmarks and forms part of Europe’s shared cultural heritage.
“The damage inflicted on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in Russia’s latest attack on Kyiv is another escalation in the destruction,” Berset said.
His comments came after a Russian overnight strike on Kyiv killed 5 people and injured at least 30 others. The attack also sparked a fire at the Dormition Cathedral on the grounds of the monastery complex. Ukrainian officials later reported that ancient icons and other religious relics had been successfully rescued from the site.
Berset reaffirmed the Council of Europe’s commitment to ensuring accountability for the consequences of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
“The Council of Europe continues its work on accountability for the damage caused by Russia’s aggression,” he said.
