A new Canadian aid package foresees the provision of about $50 million to Ukraine, announced Andriy Shevchenko, the ambassador of Ukraine to Canada, UNN reports.

“A new aid package to Ukraine from Canada, amounting to about $50 million annually over the next five years, has been noted. $35 million will be allocated for technical assistance, $5 million for humanitarian assistance, and $10-12 million for operations in the security sector. This does not take into account UNIFIER’s large-scale military mission, which is funded by the budget of the Canadian Defense Ministry,” Shevchenko said.

Operation UNIFIER is the Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) mission to support security forces in Ukraine. The operation’s focus is to assist Ukraine with security force training to help improve and build capability and capacity. Canada sends a group of about 200 members to Ukraine every six months. CAF members will be there until the end of March 2019.

The training mission harmonizes its efforts with other nations through a Multinational Joint Commission. This commission includes Canada, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States. Canada became a member in January 2015.

According to Shevchenko, this is the first large-scale aid package approved by the Canadian government under the leadership of Justin Trudeau.

“Feminism and the strengthening of the role of women are a priority for technical assistance,” Shevchenko added.

Yesterday, July 28, Canada reaffirmed its support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine and condemned the annexation of the Crimean peninsula by Russia.
