Ukraine needs strong Naval Forces equipped with modern ships. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this on July 7, 2019, during a working visit to Odesa region during the celebration of the Day of the Naval Forces of the AFU and the holding of the Ukrainian-American command-and-staff exercises Sea Breeze 2019.

“Our common goal is strong Naval Forces of Ukraine equipped with modern ships and armament. On this path, we feel the strong support of our international friends and partners who stand side by side with us in the ranks,” Zelensky emphasized addressing the sailors.

Zelensky said that during his visit to Canada, the parties had agreed to enhance cooperation in the defense sphere.

“Today, Minister of Defense of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak will discuss concrete steps of this cooperation,” he said.

During his speech, he paid tribute to the marines killed by the shelling of a medical vehicle near Vodiane.

At the same time, Zelensky assured that he was doing everything possible for the return of Ukrainian sailors captured by the Russian Federation.

“Today, the families of our captive sailors are present here. Low bow to you for your courage and endurance. I will not talk much. Believe me, we are working day and night to bring our sailors back home,” he said.

Zelesnky also presented state awards to seven Ukrainian sailors for personal courage demonstrated in the protection of state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, exemplary execution of military duty and on the occasion of the Day of the Naval Forces of the AFU.

Zelesnky also visited the moorage of the Toronto frigate of the Canadian Naval Forces, the Duncan destroyer of the British Naval Forces, the Ukrainian assault boat Stanislav and the Hetman Sahaidachny frigate of the AFU Naval Forces.

Zelesnky also got acquainted with the course of the Ukrainian-American command-and-staff exercises Sea Breeze 2019.
