Germany welcomed newly elected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s readiness to hold a dialogue with Russia on settling the Donbas conflict and expects the same readiness from Moscow.

On Tuesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which they suggested that the completion of the Ukrainian presidential election represents a new opportunity for Moscow to implement the Minsk agreements.

Both Western leaders have been critical of recent Russian decrees on expedited citizenship for residents of temporarily occupied areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

“New President of Ukraine Zelenskyi has declared his readiness for a dialogue with Russia. In the same way, we strongly expect the same readiness from Russian President Putin as one of the signatories of the Minsk Agreements,” German Government Spokesman Steffen Seibert said.

Seibert declined to disclose the details of the latest telephone conversation between the leaders.
