Latvian intelligence has warned that Russia is preparing possible provocations against the Baltic states or Poland, including drone attacks and other hybrid actions aimed at forcing NATO countries to stop supporting Ukraine. According to Fox News, as reported by UATV English, representatives of Latvian intelligence made the statement.
“We see signs that Russia is preparing military provocations against the Baltic states or Poland. We are not talking about a conventional war, because Russia is currently incapable of that. Rather, these would be hybrid attacks using missiles, drones, or other means designed to send a message: stop supporting Ukraine, or you will have problems of your own,” Latvian intelligence officials said.
Latvian intelligence believes that Vladimir Putin is not only seeking ways to force NATO countries to abandon support for Ukraine, but is also receiving distorted assessments from within his own system, increasing the risk of misjudging the West’s resolve.
“The greatest concern is the risk of miscalculation. Russian state structures tell Putin what he wants to hear, creating a dangerous feedback loop that could lead to reckless and senseless decisions,” the intelligence service stated.
“We see more and more signs that Putin wants to hear only good news. He is isolated, and this further complicates decision-making because decisions are based not on reality,” the agency added.
The warning from Latvian intelligence aligns with statements made by Polish officials interviewed by Fox News in June. According to them, Russia’s hybrid war against NATO’s eastern flank is already underway.
Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki pointed to assassinations, drone activity, cyberattacks, and attacks on critical infrastructure within NATO territory, including what he described as a Russian-organized cyberattack on Poland’s energy infrastructure aimed at “leaving part of Poland without electricity.”
Latvian intelligence also believes that Western sanctions are having a real impact on Russia, despite Moscow’s public claims that it has successfully adapted to the pressure.
As previously reported, Finnish President Alexander Stubb has dismissed concerns, including those raised in Sweden, that Russia may soon test NATO’s Article 5 by attacking one of the Alliance’s member states.
Meanwhile, German Army Commander Christian Freuding believes that Germany should prepare for a possible Russian attack by 2029—or even sooner.
