UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that his time in office has come to an end.

Speaking during a special address on Downing Street, Starmer said he would step down as leader of the Labour Party and had informed the King of his decision, UATV English reports.

“Every decision I have made has been aimed at putting first the country that I love. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party. This morning, I spoke with His Majesty the King to inform him of my decision,” Starmer said.

He added that he had asked Labour’s National Executive Committee to approve a timetable for the party leadership election, with nominations set to open on July 9.

“If an election is held, it will ensure that the new leader takes office before Parliament returns in September. I will remain Prime Minister until the election is concluded and will do everything possible to ensure an orderly transfer of power,” Starmer stated.

On June 19, the results of the Makerfield by-election were announced, with Andy Burnham emerging victorious. The result paved the way for Burnham to launch a bid for the Labour leadership—and potentially the premiership—in opposition to Starmer.

Just days earlier, Starmer had said he was prepared to take part in any contest for the leadership of the Labour Party.
