Germany and Ukraine have signed an agreement paving the way for the joint development of a new air defense system capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced at the opening of the 35th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in the Ramstein format in Brussels, UATV English reports.

“Today, Mykhailo and I signed an agreement that opens the way for the joint development of a new air defense system to counter ballistic missiles,” Pistorius said, referring to Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

The agreement marks a new stage in defense-industrial cooperation between Kyiv and Berlin and comes amid growing concerns over Russia’s intensified use of ballistic missiles against Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.

The announcement was made during the latest meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, where allies are discussing additional military assistance and ways to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine urgently needs more effective means to counter Russian ballistic attacks and revealed that Kyiv had signed a defense technology agreement with Germany aimed at integrating capabilities and accelerating the development of new systems.

The initiative reflects broader efforts by Ukraine and its partners to expand domestic production and develop advanced air defense technologies capable of addressing one of the most pressing threats posed by Russia’s missile campaign.
