Marta Kos said that the decision to launch accession negotiations with Ukraine was a long-awaited and highly significant step for the European Union, UATV English reports.

Speaking at a briefing after the formal opening of the first negotiation cluster, Kos stressed that the decision was adopted unanimously and that there was no need to repeat the events of 2023, when Viktor Orbán famously “went out for a coffee” during the vote.

“This time, nobody had to leave the room for coffee,” she said.

Kos emphasized that the decision had been eagerly awaited by all EU member states.

“We have all been waiting for this for a long time,” she noted.

The Enlargement Commissioner also voiced support for Ukraine opening all remaining negotiation clusters in July and hinted that a tentative date may already have been agreed upon.

“For me, today is a mega Monday. I hope we will have a similar date in July — an ‘incredible Tuesday,’” Kos said.
