President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine will send military experts to Latvia to share combat experience and assist in strengthening the country’s air defense capabilities, UATV English reports.
The statement followed Zelenskyy’s meeting with Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine expects to sign a bilateral agreement with Latvia in the format of a Drone Deal aimed at developing a multi-layered air defense system capable of countering different types of aerial threats.
“We will send our experts to Latvia for the exchange of experience and direct assistance in protecting airspace,” Zelenskyy said. “It is important to work together to strengthen Europe’s defense.”
The two presidents also discussed the broader regional security situation, with Zelenskyy emphasizing that the root cause of the current threats remains Russia and its ongoing aggression.
“I am grateful that we share a common position on this,” the Ukrainian president added.
In addition to security cooperation, the leaders discussed diplomatic coordination and Ukraine’s European integration process.
Zelenskyy stressed the importance of opening all negotiation clusters for Ukraine’s accession talks with the European Union as quickly as possible.
“Right now there are good opportunities for this,” he said, thanking Latvia for its consistent support of Ukraine’s EU ambitions.
Earlier this month, Latvia’s Air Force reported the entry of unidentified drones into Latvian airspace from the direction of Russia.
On the same day, media reports said four oil storage tanks were damaged during a drone-related incident in the Latvian city of Rēzekne.
Local police later confirmed that two drones had crashed into the oil storage facility.
