Latvia’s Foreign Minister Baiba Braže stated that Europe needs to assume more responsibility for its security and defense by increasing defense spending.
As reported by Delfi and cited by UATV English, Braže took part on Thursday in a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Nordic-Baltic Eight (Nordic-Baltic Eight).
The discussions focused on support for Ukraine, strengthening European security and the capabilities of NATO, as well as tightening sanctions against Russia.
Braže emphasized that while Europe must take greater responsibility for its defense, the United States and close transatlantic cooperation remain an indispensable foundation of European security.
In her view, the efforts of the European Union in the defense sector should complement and strengthen NATO’s capabilities.
Since all NB8 countries are NATO allies, preparations for the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara were at the center of discussions. Ministers agreed that it is crucial to reaffirm Alliance unity, the enduring importance of Article 5 commitments, the determination to continue long-term support for Ukraine, and progress in increasing defense spending.
The ministers also discussed the situation in the Middle East and international efforts to ensure access to the Strait of Hormuz.
Baiba Braže briefed participants on ongoing work at the United Nations Security Council regarding the Middle East.
In addition, ministers discussed the impact of the conflict on the NB8 region and measures at both national and EU levels in response to disruptions in oil product supplies and their consequences.
The Nordic-Baltic Eight includes Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Finland, and Sweden.
Earlier, media reported that the European Union is working on how it would respond if one of its member states were attacked.
Amid tensions related to the conflict in Iran, Donald Trump stated that he is seriously considering the possibility of withdrawing the United States from NATO.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio added that after the conflict in Iran ends, the United States will review the necessity of NATO membership.
