The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense plans to gradually increase the number of armed forces personnel to 20,000 service members.

This was reported by the press service of the Lithuanian defense ministry.

Relevant amendments to the Law “On the Basic Structure of the Army” were presented to the State Council by Defense Minister Dovilė Šakalienė.

In particular, the amendments provide for an increase in the size of the country’s armed forces.

In the long term, the number of professional military personnel is to be increased to 20,000, the number of volunteers to 6,800, and the number of cadets to 600.

The number of generals and senior officers will also be increased accordingly, based on the size and capabilities of military units.

In addition, the number of reserve troops called up annually for training and exercises will be increased.

“By reorganizing the structure of the Armed Forces, we aim to strengthen Lithuania’s defense capabilities by creating new military units, increasing troop numbers, and establishing operational depth, which will allow our Armed Forces to operate more effectively both nationally and with our allies,” said Šakalienė.

Earlier, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense announced plans to modernize and reinforce the second route through the Suwałki Corridor — a key area on the border with Poland, considered a potential site of aggression against the EU and NATO.
