Kyiv, August 22, 2025 – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stressed that Ukraine’s security guarantees must be as robust as NATO’s Article 5, ensuring collective defense against any future aggression.

Speaking at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Zelenskyy highlighted ongoing negotiations involving security advisors, military officials, and diplomats to define these guarantees. He emphasized that the assurances should include substantial support for Ukraine’s armed forces, fully aligned with NATO standards.

“Ukraine is open to dialogue, but Russia must come with a clear agenda,” Zelenskyy said, criticizing Russian authorities for obstructing potential meetings between leaders. He also called for stronger international sanctions to pressure Russia toward a diplomatic resolution.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reaffirmed the alliance’s commitment to Ukraine, noting that NATO allies and Ukraine are collaborating on robust security guarantees to prevent any future Russian aggression. Rutte emphasized the crucial role of these guarantees in securing Ukraine’s long-term future, with active involvement from European countries and the United States.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that Ukraine should adopt a more offensive strategy in its conflict with Russia, arguing that victory requires proactive measures.

Russia, however, has set conditions for any meeting between Zelenskyy and President Vladimir Putin, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stating that such talks are contingent upon resolving unspecified preliminary issues.

These developments underscore the complex and evolving geopolitical landscape as Ukraine seeks security guarantees and diplomatic solutions while facing ongoing Russian obstruction.
