Why the visit of the Prime Minister of Japan to Kyiv was important?

The visit of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to Kyiv demonstrated the consolidation of the Western world in support of Ukraine. This opinion was expressed by political scientist Vladimir Fesenko on the FREEDOM TV channel.

He noted that this visit to Ukraine was the first for the leaders of Japan during the war.

“The visit of the Prime Minister of Japan to Kyiv took place almost simultaneously with the visit of the Chinese leader to Moscow. And thus it was a signal, a signal from Japan, a signal from the West. Someone flirts with Moscow, but at the same time there is a strengthening, strengthening of support for Kyiv and the consolidation of the Western world in support of Ukraine. And this is a very important point, which shows how the situation will develop further. This is a kind of response to, let’s say, hints that supposedly some kind of anti-Western, anti-American coalition may be formed there in the future. But if such a coalition is formed, it will also strengthen the Western world,” Fesenko said.

At the same time, the political scientist believes that this visit was not only a response to Russia and China. It is important both from the point of view of Japan’s chairmanship of the G7 and from the point of view of Japan’s active participation in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine. Already, Japan is providing assistance, including in projects to restore the Ukrainian energy infrastructure, which suffered from Russian shelling.

“But Japan can be one of the main donors in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine. Moreover, Japan has a lot of experience in this. Both after 2014 and before the start of the big war, Japan participated in a number of major projects, in particular, environmental projects in Ukraine. And I think that there is potential for a number of large projects already in the post-war period. And for us, Japan is important, first of all, as an economic partner in post-war development. And, of course, as our active partner in the Pacific. Incidentally, it is important in this respect that relations between Japan and South Korea are being restored. And South Korea also plays a significant role in the global economy, I think in the military sector too, it has a very developed military industry. So I think that there is potential and reserves for the active promotion of Ukrainian interests in Japan, and in South Korea, and in general in the countries of the Pacific basin, and in East Asia,” Fesenko said.
