Volcano, a movie by Ukrainian film director Roman Bondarchuk, has won the Grand Prix at the International Festival of New Film in Croatia, the Ukrainian State Film Agency wrote on Facebook.
Volcano is not just a movie, but “a multi-layered fairy tale that at the same time depicts a bitter reality with an ease,” according to the festival’s jury members.
Bondarchuk is an art director of the international human rights film festival, Docudays UA. Volcano is his debut movie, which won an award at the Golden Apricot Film Festival in Armenia. Bondarchuk also received an award for the best director at the International Film Festival in Kazakhstan.
The International Festival of New Film in Croatia was founded in 1996, and it is considered the oldest film festival in the country. The goal is to discover new authors who are not afraid to explore, experiment and invent new visual languages.
On Oct. 21, Volcano will be screened in Kyiv at the festival of new German cinema.
