On Saturday, May 30, Ukraine received a launcher for the IRIS-T surface-to-air missile system from Germany.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this on social media on Sunday, UATV English reports.
The head of state said that over the past week, Russia launched 2,300 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided aerial bombs, and 108 missiles of various types against Ukraine. All of these strikes targeted civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings and energy facilities.
“Every day, we are working to strengthen protection against Russian terror. Yesterday, we received a new IRIS-T launcher. We thank Germany for its continued contribution to protecting people. Thousands upon thousands of lives have been saved thanks to such strong support,” Zelenskyy said.
He added that Ukraine also needs additional missiles for its air defense systems in order to maintain sufficient capabilities to repel Russian attacks.
It is worth recalling that Zelenskyy recently sent a letter to US President Donald Trump and members of Congress regarding shortages of air defense equipment.
He also stated that during Russia’s massive attack on May 24, Moscow used two Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missiles.
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal later said that the United States would respond to the Ukrainian president’s appeal concerning Ukraine’s air defense needs.
