Ukraine issue tops 2022 Munich security conference

Zelensky at Munich Security Conference-2020

This weekend, more than 100 ministers and an excess of 30 heads of state and government are expected to attend the Munich Security Conference that will feature talks on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg will be among the dignitaries attending the three-day event, known as “Davos for defence.”

President Zelensky’s speech is scheduled for February 19, 15:30-16:00 as part of the “Regional conflicts” section. Here is the agenda of 2022 Munich Security Conference.

February 18, the main program kicks off from 1230 GMT with speeches by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

A meeting of the foreign ministers of Germany, France, and Ukraine is also planned on the fringes of the conference, according to the German Foreign Ministry. Ukraine, Russia, and NATO are the focus of the conference, especially on February 19.

Russian officials for various reasons won’t attend the Conference, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

On the eve of the event, Wolfgang Ischinger, the chairman of the Munich Security Conference, stated that “The trend towards the retreat of democracy continues. It is therefore not surprising that a feeling of helplessness seems to be growing in Europe and beyond.” “More needs to be done to make people aware of the importance of deterrence as a method of conflict prevention,” he added, remarking that he was pleased that “Europe once again has a voice in the intensive diplomatic discourse”. After that, “it almost seemed like Europe would be reduced to a spectator role as others discussed both the crisis and how best to resolve it.”

The Munich Security Report 2022 explores the emergence of a sense of “collective helplessness” in the face of a plethora of global challenges and stimulates the debate on how it can best be overcome.
