U.S. President Donald Trump praised NATO countries’ decision to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP and confirmed his intention to promote an agreement with allies for the purchase of American weapons — including for the purpose of providing military aid to Ukraine.
He made the statement on Sunday during a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland, according to Ukrinform’s correspondent.
“We had a meeting [at the NATO summit in The Hague – ed.], where they announced contributions of 5% instead of 2%, and they will pay instead of avoiding payments,” Trump noted.
He called the recent NATO summit “one of the best” meetings the Alliance has ever held. At the same time, the U.S. President emphasized that the latest agreements with NATO — which include joint efforts to support Ukraine militarily — must be implemented.
“We will be sending military equipment and other hardware to NATO, and they’ll do what they want with it. But I think, mostly, they will work with Ukraine,” Trump said.
As reported earlier, on July 14, during a meeting at the White House between U.S. President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the two sides announced an agreement to provide Ukraine with billions of dollars in military aid.
