Forty years ago, the world faced one of the largest nuclear disasters — the fourth reactor of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded. A significant amount of radioactive substances was released. Hundreds of thousands of people have been overcoming the consequences of that tragedy for years. This was recalled today, April 26, on the Day of Remembrance of the Chornobyl disaster by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, UATV English reports.
“To contain the radiation, a sarcophagus was built over the destroyed reactor. Later, more than 40 countries enclosed it with a safe confinement to prevent new disasters. These two structures are what protect from radiation emissions and contamination. Their maintenance and protection are in everyone’s interest. But with its war, Russia is again bringing the world to the brink of a technological disaster: Russian-Iranian ‘Shahed’ drones constantly fly over the station, and one of them last year struck the confinement,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
He stressed that the international community must put an end to Russia’s nuclear terrorism, and the only way to do this is to force Russia to stop its senseless and dangerous attacks.
“We remember everyone who gave their lives while dealing with the aftermath of this tragedy. Eternal memory to all victims of the Chornobyl disaster,” the President of Ukraine concluded.
It should be recalled that on October 1, 2025, as a result of Russian shelling of energy infrastructure in Kyiv region, in the city of Slavutych, a state of emergency occurred at the facilities of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant — a blackout took place.
