On July 21, Ukraine’s military said it had struck a Russian MiG-29 fighter aircraft and a Pantsir-S1 air defense system during an operation against the Khalino air base in Russia’s Kursk region, UATV English reports.
According to General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the strike was carried out by the 15th Separate Artillery Reconnaissance Brigade, known as Chornyi Lis (“Black Forest”).

“The 15th Separate Artillery Reconnaissance Brigade ‘Chornyi Lis’ successfully conducted an operation at the Khalino airfield in the Kursk region. A MiG-29 fighter aircraft and a Pantsir-S1 surface-to-air missile and gun system were struck,” the General Staff said.
The military also released footage that it said showed the attack. According to the General Staff, the damaged equipment is valued at approximately $45 million, including around $25 million for the MiG-29 fighter and $20 million for the Pantsir-S1 air defense system.
The MiG-29 is a Soviet-designed multirole fighter that remains in service with the Russian Aerospace Forces. The Pantsir-S1 is a mobile short-range air defense system combining missiles and rapid-fire cannons to protect military facilities and strategic assets from aircraft, cruise missiles and drones.
The strike follows a series of Ukrainian long-range operations targeting Russian military infrastructure. On July 17, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) reported striking seven aircraft shelters at an air base, damaging or destroying Su-30SM, Su-30 and Su-24 aircraft.
A day later, Ukraine launched another large-scale overnight drone operation involving more than 400 drones. Open-source imagery showed fires at multiple Russian military and industrial facilities, including logistics hubs, industrial parks and an oil storage site.
Ukraine has significantly expanded its long-range strike campaign in recent months, targeting air bases, fuel depots, logistics hubs and defense industry facilities deep inside Russia in an effort to degrade Moscow’s military capabilities and disrupt support for its war against Ukraine.
