U.S. President Donald Trump assured that the United States would assist Poland and the Baltic states in defending themselves if Russia continues its escalation.
He stated this while speaking to the press.
Journalists asked Trump whether the U.S. would defend Poland and the Baltic states if Russian dictator Vladimir Putin continued to escalate.
“I will do it,” the American president replied.
Trump also commented on the recent incursion of Russian fighter jets into Estonian airspace, saying: “We don’t like that.”
Earlier, Ukraine’s Air Force reported at least eight Russian drones entered Polish territory. One of them hit a residential building in Poland.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that 19 targets had crossed into Poland, with four drones shot down.
Russia’s Defense Ministry, for its part, claimed that striking Polish targets was not planned but did not deny the possibility of drones crossing into Polish territory.
A number of foreign diplomats and NATO officials reacted to the incident, including NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
The number of Russian drones confirmed to have crossed into Poland on the night of September 10 has risen to 21.
On September 19, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland without permission, remaining there for 12 minutes.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas condemned the violation of Estonian airspace by the Russian jets.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged EU leaders to swiftly approve the 19th package of sanctions against Russia.
Following the incident, Estonia requested NATO consultations.
Russia’s Defense Ministry, however, claimed its MiG-31s allegedly did “not violate” Estonian airspace.
