Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov was illegally sentenced by the “Supreme Court of Crimea” to 6 years in prison in a general regime colony, to a fine of 200,000 Russian rubles and 200 hours of correctional labor for allegedly “organizing mass riots” in February 26, 2014 under the walls of the Crimean parliament.

UATV reports this referring to the Telegram-page of the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova.

The Ombudswoman emphasized that from the beginning of the trial Refat Chubarov had been deprived of the right to a fair trial, access to justice and effective legal protection, which is a direct violation of articles 6 and 13 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Denisova noted that she did not recognize the decision of the so-called “Supreme Court of Crimea.”

“Today’s verdict is another demonstration that the occupying country continues its policy of persecution and repression of Ukrainian citizens. I call on the international community to respond to these facts and increase pressure on the aggressor to enforce international law and immediately release all those illegally detained in Russia and the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions”, – she wrote.
