After months of refusing to consider approving military assistance, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Mike Johnson agrees Ukraine needs immediate help from the US.

House Speaker Mike Johnson made such a statement in a comment for C-SPAN.

Johnson, determined to put Ukraine aid to a vote on Saturday, says the US “can’t play politics” on this matter as Putin could really attack a NATO ally and “march through Europe if he was allowed”.

“I do believe the intel and the briefings that we’ve got […] I think that Putin would continue to march through Europe if he were allowed. I think he might go to the Balcans next, I think he might have a showdown with Poland, one of our NATO allies,” House Speaker said.

Johnson, who previously called himself a “speaker of war time”, believes he is doing the right thing.

“To put it bluntly, I would rather send bullets to Ukraine than American boys,” he stressed, adding that in that case, his son, who is to attend a naval academy soon, would suffer the consequences of inaction.

On April 17, Mike Johnson revealed the legislative text of the bill on Ukraine aid which still includes $61 billion for Ukraine, $23 billion of which will be used to replenish US stockpiles. The bill is expected to be voted on Saturday, April 19.

President Biden has expressed support for Johnson’s proposal as the White House emphasized on the immediate measures to help Ukraine multiple times.

“The House must pass the package this week and the Senate should quickly follow. I will sign this into law immediately to send a message to the world: We stand with our friends, and we won’t let Iran or Russia succeed,” Biden stated.
