NATO Military Committee Chief: Too Early to Discuss Deployment of Foreign Troops in Ukraine

It is premature to talk about the possible deployment of foreign military forces in Ukraine, NATO Military Committee Chair Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone said in an interview with Corriere della Sera.

According to Dragone, the potential presence of foreign troops in Ukraine is “a matter of international politics and negotiations with Moscow,” but such issues have not yet been discussed within NATO.

“It is at the very least premature. We know that the question of contingents has been raised by some countries, perhaps bilaterally. But, I repeat, it remains at an embryonic stage,” Dragone noted.

He emphasized that any deployment of allied forces in Ukraine would need to be defined through political-level security guarantees.

“For example: on the ground, who decides whether the Russians or the Ukrainians have violated the agreement? Who develops the rules of engagement? Which territory should be protected? Are the soldiers just monitoring or also defending themselves, and if so, with what weapons? Nothing has been defined,” he explained.

At the same time, Dragone underscored that “NATO remains committed above all to protecting the citizens of its member states.”
