A Ukrainian unit has passed the qualifications to become a member of the NATO Response force. The 140th Center for Special Operations of Armed Forces of Ukraine has successfully passed exams in Lithuania to become certified, Ukraiinskyi Militarnyi Portal (Ukrainian Military Portal) reported.

This is the first time in history when a unit from a non-NATO country has been certified as a SOF (Special Operations Forces) unit and obtained the right to be involved in NATO operations.

The NRF was created at the November 2002 NATO Summit in Prague to replace the Allied Command Europe Mobile Force. The first talks on reorganizing NATO’s mobile force took place in Warsaw in August 2002 at the initiative of US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Quick reaction forces are in constant combat readiness.

NRF consists of land forces, special forces, air forces and naval forces that are ready for conducting evacuation or crisis response operations in any part of the world for 5 days. In a significant military conflict, the NRF has to be capable to deter an enemy for up to 30 days before the main military forces are in place.

The decision to use the NRF is taken by the North Atlantic Council. The NRF ground forces brigade is capable of conducting forced-entry operations. Marine forces act as a strike group with an aircraft carrier, land, and amphibious ready groups. Air forces are capable of conducting up to 200 daily flights. Special forces may be involved in operations.
