Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs stated that talks about sending Latvian soldiers to Ukraine can only take place once it is clear what security guarantees will be provided and what role European countries will play.

“If there is a peace treaty or peace agreement with security guarantees, then the conversation will move to the potential presence of European and NATO countries to ensure this peace agreement,” Rinkēvičs said.

He emphasized that the first step is to finalize a peace agreement and understand its main elements, the security guarantees, and the role of each country.

Regarding the possible deployment of Latvian troops, Rinkēvičs noted that in Latvia, the decision is made by the Saeima, following discussions in the Cabinet of Ministers and the National Security Council.

“But to talk about all this [deployment of peacekeepers], we need to know all the details. Right now, these details are not clear. As far as I know, representatives of the armed forces of the Coalition of the Willing are working on this,” the president added.

Previously, planning teams of the Coalition of the Willing met with U.S. counterparts to discuss providing reliable security guarantees to Ukraine and preparing for the deployment of deterrence forces in case of a ceasefire. Around a dozen countries have expressed readiness to send troops to Ukraine under international security guarantees once hostilities end.
