Italy supports Ukraine’s full membership in the European Union and is ready to contribute to strengthening Kyiv’s position on its path to accession, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said, UATV English reports.
According to his remarks ahead of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Helsingborg, Tajani emphasized the need to take concrete steps toward Ukraine’s integration into the EU.
“On Ukraine, we need to do what is important to strengthen its position. We support Ukraine’s full membership in the European Union, but we must pave the way to achieve this goal,” he said.
Tajani added that Italy is prepared to take further measures to support Ukraine in meeting European standards, with the broader aim of EU enlargement that would also include Western Balkan countries.
He also underscored the importance of NATO as a cornerstone of global security.
“NATO is crucial. It is not only a military alliance but also a political one. Without NATO, it will be difficult to maintain peace in the world,” Tajani said.
The Italian minister reaffirmed Rome’s strong support for the alliance and signaled readiness to increase defense spending, stressing the need for Europe to strengthen its own defense capabilities.
“One strong pillar is America. The second strong pillar is Europe,” he added.
The comments come as Ukraine continues to push for full integration into both the EU and NATO, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy repeatedly rejecting any “simplified” or partial membership formats.
