German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that NATO will firmly respond to any violations of Alliance territory by Russia.
“Russia must understand clearly: we will defend every centimeter of NATO territory together and in solidarity. We support Estonia, the Baltic states, Poland, Romania, and all our Eastern European allies,” Wadephul emphasized during debates in the Bundestag.
He recalled a recent incident when Russian fighter jets violated Estonian airspace for 12 minutes, calling it unacceptable. According to Wadephul, NATO has already responded politically and through the NATO Council, and similar incidents have been recorded earlier in Poland and Romania.
Wadephul had returned to Berlin from New York, where he spoke at the UN Security Council on the situation in Estonia, before heading back to the UN General Assembly after the Bundestag debates.
NATO’s statement on recent airspace violations stressed that the Alliance will respond to Russia’s irresponsible behavior as necessary and appropriate, remaining committed to the obligations under Article 5 of the Washington Treaty.
