Fighting for Chasiv Yar: why Russian occupiers are fiercely attacking the city?

The Russian occupation army is seeking to capture the town of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region for a number of reasons, including political ones. The head of the press service of the 26th artillery brigade named after him spoke about this on the FREEDOM TV channel. Roman Dashkevich, senior lieutenant Oleg Kalashnikov.

“There are several reasons. One reason, perhaps the very, very first one, is the goals of the “SVO”. At the very beginning, it was said that they wanted to go to the administrative borders of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, because the proxy republics were introduced into the Russian Federation. The second is probably what is now being exaggerated in the media – a new significant event for Putin – May 9. Third, Chasiv Yar is indeed a very important strategic defense point. And it is he who covers the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk and Druzhkivka-Konstantinivka agglomerations, that is, it is he who stands in the way of the fact that Russia can enter the operational space and continue to try to storm these particular settlements,” he said.

Kalashnikov noted that Chasiv Yar is located on a hill from which it is possible to carry out fire control of Kramatorsk, Druzhkovka, and settlements that are located below.

In addition, the speaker recalled that Chasiv Yar covers the logistics routes of the Ukrainian military, which directly lead to the first line of defense.

In his opinion, the political subtext is that it is important for Putin to demonstrate some kind of “victory” to the Russians, despite all the losses of the Russian Federation.

“But the main reason is that Russia is a terrorist with a capital T. The main goal, most likely, of this entire war is to simply destroy the Ukrainian nation, the Ukrainian people,” Kalashnikov emphasized.

According to him, for the Ukrainian military, a strong psychological incentive is the fact that they are defending their land and their families.

“Why do we manage to simply destroy immeasurably more of our enemies who attack? If you look at their losses even in our sector, they are significant both in manpower and in equipment. If you look from 2022, many of their units left here, having lost their combat effectiveness. That is, by Russian standards, the loss of combat effectiveness is when 30% of the units’ regular strength remains. The same 11th Separate Airborne Brigade, which is located in our area today, was assigned for restoration. The same 72nd separate motorized rifle brigade, also Russian, was taken to Svetlodarsk for restoration. That is, they are losing disproportionately more in resources than our defenders,” said Kalashnikov.

Let us remind you that military-political observer of the Information Resistance group Alexander Kovalenko believes that in the near future the offensive of Russian troops on Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region will gain momentum. The occupiers will not be able to capture the city by May 9, as the Russian military command wants, but will continue to press. The biggest problem in defending Chasiv Yar is that the Russian army has a significant air advantage.
