The European Union has welcomed recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, noting that his tone marks a significant shift from his earlier rhetoric.
“We view this very positively because these are all the right messages. Yes, we must stop buying Russian energy. Yes, Ukraine must win the war… and all the other statements he made about Ukraine and Russia,” said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas while speaking to journalists in New York.
Asked whether she was surprised by Trump’s words, Kallas replied:
“These were very strong statements that we had not heard from him in this format before, so it is very good that we are now on the same page.”
“All global actors must exert greater pressure on Russia to end the war, because it is clear the escalation comes from them; they are the ones who do not want peace. So anything we, all players, can do in this regard would be wonderful,” Kallas concluded.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with President Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Trump stated that, given the current situation in Russia, Ukraine is capable of regaining all territories seized by the aggressor state.
