Andriy Eider, the sailor from the captured Ukrainian Navy boat Berdiansk, has been diagnosed with hepatitis B, his lawyer Alexandra Markova reports on Facebook. She cites the medical report given to the prisoner of war after he was discharged from the medical unit of the Matrosskaya Tishina detention center in Moscow.
“Here is just the quote [from the report]. “Anti-HCV – positive, from 20.11.2018, HBsAg – positive from 20.11.2018.” As can be seen, the date of the blood results is 20.11.2018, even before sailors were captured.”
According to Ukrinform, which cites the State Commissioner on Human Rights Liudmyla Denisova, the sailor could have been infected during his surgery while being held illegally in detention.
On January 28, members of the crew of the Berdiansk Andriy Artemenko, Andriy Eider and Vasyl Soroka were transferred from the medical unit of the Matrosskaya Tishina detention center to Lefortovo as reported earlier.
On January 24, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted a resolution entitled “The escalation of tensions around the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait and threats to European security,” which officially demands that Russia treat Ukrainian military sailors captured in the Kerch Strait in accordance with the Geneva Conventions relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
On November 25, 2018, Russian border ships fired on and seized three Ukrainian naval vessels near the Kerch Strait, as reported. The vessels were moving from Odesa to Mariupol. Twenty-four Ukrainian sailors were captured. They are currently being illegally detained in Moscow. All have declared themselves prisoners of war.
