An extended-format meeting has started at the White House with the presidents of the United States and Ukraine, joined by European leaders who arrived in Washington to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine.
The meeting is taking place in the East Room of the U.S. president’s residence.
In addition to the presidents of Ukraine and the United States, participants include European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Key statements from the meeting:
A very successful day so far. We will try to establish trilateral cooperation between the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia, – Trump.
Putin has agreed that Ukraine will receive security guarantees, Trump said during a meeting with European leaders.
“During these negotiations, we must decide who will do what regarding guaranteeing Ukraine’s security,” he added.
“We just had a good conversation with Trump. Possibly the best so far. Or maybe the best is still ahead,” — Zelenskyy.
Trump confirmed this.
Trump is optimistic about reaching an agreement that would prevent future aggression against Ukraine.
“I don’t think it will happen. I believe it’s overstated,” — he emphasized.
Zelenskyy: “I showed President Trump a couple of nuances on the map, I thank him for this map.”
- Zelenskyy: “The issue of territorial exchanges can only be discussed at the level of leaders during a trilateral meeting with Putin, which Trump will try to organize.”
- NATO Secretary General: “We have finally broken the deadlock.”
- Merz: “We would like to see a ceasefire already at the next meeting.”
- Trump responded that “all six wars” he stopped were resolved without a ceasefire.
- Giorgia Meloni: “This is an important sign, because over the past three years we have not seen any willingness from Russia to stop the war.
- Macron: “We all support the idea of a ceasefire before the trilateral meeting.”
- Von der Leyen: “We had an incredible NATO summit, an incredible trade agreement, and we are happy to work with you on Article 5 and security agreements. Thank you for mentioning the thousands of kidnapped children. All children must be returned. This must be one of the priorities in the negotiations.”
- Stubb: “In the past two weeks, there has been more progress toward ending the war than in the last 3.5 years. The progress involves security guarantees and movement toward a trilateral meeting. Why am I here? We have an 800-mile border with Russia. The Second World War, the Winter War — we found a solution in 1944, and I am confident that a similar solution can be found in 2025.”
If we want to achieve peace and justice, we must stay united. Italy stands with Ukraine. We will discuss important points, security guarantees to ensure this war does not happen again, and talk about a model similar to Article 5.” Meloni added.
“When we talk about Ukraine’s security, we are also talking about security for Europe,” said UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“We want to come up with something similar to Article 5 to prevent another invasion of Ukraine,” he added.
“A resolution on security guarantees for Ukraine will be reached today,” said Trump.
“In a week or two, we may end this war. Both sides want to reach an agreement,” the President of the US concluded.
