Pope Francis is ready to mediate in a meeting between President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian president Vladimir Putin. At the same time, the Vatican did not know anything about these negotiations, Vatican diplomat Cardinal Leonardo Sandri said, UATV informs with reference to la Reppublica.
“The Congregation (the Congregation of the Eastern Churches – performs the functions of the Vatican’s diplomatic department, – ed.) does not know about the meeting of the presidents of Ukraine and Russia, but believes that the mediation of the Holy See can still take place after the work of the Minsk group. At the same time, Sandri argues that Pope Francis could take part in this (the meeting of Zelenskyy and Putin – ed.), as he has already done, to help reconciliation”, – the newspaper writes.
Sandri believes that the Pope can contribute to these negotiations, as he has done in other situations.
“I remember the meeting he had with Al-Sistani in Iraq and other similar meetings”, – the cardinal added.
Earlier, Zelenskyy said that the Vatican can become “a perfect place for dialogue about peace”.
