Historical Drama “Oleksa Dovbush” Filming Underway

The filming of the Ukrainian historical drama “Dovbush” has begun.

The events of the film unfold in the first half of the XVIII century in the mysterious Carpathian Mountains and deal with the dramatic life of Oleksa Dovbush – who’s often compared to the mythical Robin Hood, as he robbed the rich and give to the poor – his uneasy love and struggle for a better fate for his people.

His residence is believed to have been located near the city of Bolekhiv in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. It is a rock complex, now called the Rocks of Dovbush, which is one of the seven historical and seven natural wonders of Ukraine.

The film was a winner of the 10th Derzhkino State Movie Competition, the Ministry of Culture said. State financial support for the project is $2,321,000 out of the total $3,095,685 financing needed for its production.

The author of the idea and the co-author of the script and the film director is Oles Sanin, who carries the honorary title of “Distinguished Artist of Ukraine” and who’s been awarded the Alexander Dovzhenko Ukrainian State Award.

The photography director is Serhiy Mykhalchuk, who, addition to film work, has produced documentaries and television feature films, music videos, and advertisements.
