Four years ago, on February 26, 2014, residents of Crimea and heartfelt Ukrainians gathered to protest the Russian invasion of the peninsula. However, another rally in favor of the invasion also took it to the street, resulting in violent clashes between the two groups, leaving two people killed and dozens injured.

Russian authorities have since then investigated the event and as a result prosecuted Achtjom Tschijgos, Mustafa Deghermenje, and Ali Asanov, as well as other Crimean Tatar activists, in what may only appear as a politically motivated trial.

International organizations agreed that the peninsula was illegally occupied and condemned Russia’s belligerent behavior. In particular, during that time, three UN resolutions on the Crimea were adopted. At the same time, a lot of Western countries have introduced economic sanctions on Russia.
