Ukraine and Poland are now united in confronting a single common threat — Russia — President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his evening address, according to UATV English.
Reflecting on the moral weight of July 11, Zelenskyy noted that this date marks the annual commemoration in both Poland and Ukraine of civilians killed in Volyn during World War II. He said representatives of both governments took part in joint prayer services on this occasion, both in Ukraine and in Poland. He added that Ukraine continues working to establish the full facts about those who died during that period, with search efforts ongoing at former village sites and burial grounds, and pledged to speed up this process.
The President also announced that exhumation work would begin in two days at the sites of the former villages of Ostrivky and Volia Ostrovetska.
“What we need is the full truth and a Christian commemoration of the victims. But we must also remember that today, in our own time, Ukraine and Poland face one common threat, which is a deadly threat to our independence, to both our states, to every city and every village. That threat is Russia,” he said, adding that discussing the past should not create doubt about the future of Ukraine, Poland, or Europe as a whole.
As previously reported, a new phase of exhumation and reburial work for residents killed in August 1943 is set to begin July 13 at the former village sites of Ostrivky and Volia Ostrovetska in the Kovel district of Volyn region.
