At least 265 civilians were killed and 1,816 injured in Ukraine in June as a result of Russian attacks, making it one of the deadliest months for civilians since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, according to the United Nations, UATV English reports.
Addressing the UN Security Council, Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, said preliminary data from the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) indicate that civilian casualties increased further after May, which had already recorded the highest monthly toll since April 2022.
“This concerning trend is seemingly continuing into July,” DiCarlo said.
She noted that Russia carried out three large-scale strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities during the past week, targeting densely populated civilian areas.
“Any attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, wherever they occur, are a clear violation of international humanitarian law and must stop immediately,” she stressed.
According to OHCHR, the UN has verified that since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, at least 16,402 civilians, including 802 children, have been killed, while 48,428 people, including 2,948 children, have been injured. The UN emphasized that the actual figures are likely significantly higher.
Earlier, Ukrainian authorities reported that a large-scale Russian attack on July 6 killed 14 people in Kyiv and the surrounding region and injured nearly 60 others, including five children.
