UN Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned Russia’s overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities on July 2, calling for an immediate de-escalation and an unconditional ceasefire.
The statement was delivered by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, who said the Secretary-General reiterated that attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure are clear violations of international humanitarian law and must stop immediately, UATV English reports.
“Any attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are clear violations of international humanitarian law and must cease immediately,” Dujarric said.
He added that Guterres had again called for urgent de-escalation leading to a full, immediate, and unconditional ceasefire.
According to the UN’s Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, the latest Russian strikes are part of a deadly pattern of attacks targeting densely populated residential areas.
The UN also noted that civilian casualties in Ukraine increased by 40% between December 2025 and May 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier.
Russia launched a massive combined missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight on July 2, causing extensive damage to residential areas and civilian infrastructure.
